Trisomie 21 Interview MusicThatJumpedTheShark.com
Who did the artwork for your new disc?
For black label, T21 plays one kind of rock’n roll, it’s our will, guitars are important, drums and bass too but so as to create what we dream of.
Who did the T21 artwork on albums past?
Each album is diffferent, but something never change, we feel the atmosphere around us and we decide to use one way to express our feeling. Each new work is an experience, a rebirth, the world is changing, we must change but our values must be the same.
Who is in your band?
The band is Hervé Lomprez and me with the help of some friends : françois Pavan (guitars), Tg parker (guitars), Martn Blohorn (electronics), Olivier Lechevestrier (management).
Whats the biggest difference between what you were doing early/middle and now in your recordings?
Since Happy mystery child album, Hervé compose some piece of music and J sing immediately, to conserve the first emotion, the reflexion is before and after recording, it’s a very hard work of studio. With Black Label the sound of the bass and guitars is greasy, sad sound, we pile up a lot of different sound and we find a specific one, like a puzzle.
What kind of equipment do you use as instruments & for recording?
We use vintage keyboards, digital mixer and dirct to disk (Sounscape).
What is the biggest thing you notice about your long career looking back?
For us, music is an uncomfortable universe, the creative process is border line but it’s the price for freedom, we are pround to be free.
What is your goal when making music?
Music is a way to communicate our emotions, our vision of the world ; like wing machine, we weave reality ; the goal is the adventure, behind what we know, there is what we’ll discover.
What kind of line up changes has happened to T21 over the years?
One thing never change, T21 it’s two brothers, it’s a good formula, we have a perfect cohesion, a real complicity, some friends help us, but T21 is a sibling.
How big is T21 in Europa/Japan/South America?
In Japan, don’t know exactly but in Europe and south America we have a good feeling.
Have you ever considered touring the US?
If the USA want us, we agree. We hope to be on stage in USA, wait and see.
What exactly is the T21 symbol – it seems to be a boy holding something?
This little boy or girl no one knows, is a remind of our first album, in English symbolized illusions lost and a futur no very quiet.
What has your experience been like working with various record labels?
Our experience with few words is: freedom has a price.
Your music has been around for so long, but your records have only been available once in the USA, back 20 years ago during the golden era of Wax Tax records. Why?
Thanks for music and great, all records labels see their interest, use each group to make money, we need respect, we don’t cheat. For us the best label is the next.
What was it like working with Wax Trax records at that time?
PIAS works with them at this time but we have not any contact.
What was it like working with the Play it Again Sam record label? Did you like the other bands on that label at that time?
We work with Pias at the beginning of the 80’s, it’s a small label, we are free, all is ok but when money arrive all is changing, make money without respect for musicians, it’s all they do. At this time we know Front 242, Neon Judgement, Tuxedomoon, Legendery Pink Dots.
There are so many samples & loops on your seminal work “Plays The Pictures” – can you give us a list of the sample sources?
It’s impossible, sampling is like a vampire, we don’t remenber the names of all victims. Plays the picture it’s the vampire state building.
Is that a sample of Billy Idol saying “New York!” on “Plays The Pictures”?
New York is here like a symbol, the skyscrapers leave the impression of a town as high as large, a kind of Babel tower. New York is a vertigo.
Do people see “Plays The Pictures” as your ‘masterwork’?
Don’t think so, “pays the pictures” it’s a very special thing, like a flying saucer ; PIAS ask us for making music specially for movies, it’s was very interesting experience, we try again with each T21 album is different, but we like always the last.
What ‘kind of’ person are you?
What are things you like in life?
Drinking a good french wine with some friends.
What music do you listen to when your alone?
T21 don’t listen a lot of music.
