How did ideas start for recording your new album?
I blush as I type this, but were rather megalomaniac over the last year and just a fortnight ago we unleashed our fifth alum in the space of a year. It’s “Chemical Playschool Vols 16 & 18″. Self-released, we didn’t even announce it, but happily word -of-mouth is pretty effective in Pink Dots‘ Land. Still, after reading your second question, Im guessing you mean “The Gethsemane Option” which is the one in the shops. I think ideas began flowing when I moved back to the UK after 25 years of living in Holland. Have a real love/hate thing with the county I was born in. Can’t stand the politics/politicians but I do cherish much that’s quintessentially British…and that album is dripping with that sentiment.
In reality Rolling Stone liked something of ours about 20 years ago and we keep recycling the sticker. Of course, maybe I missed something because I never actually read it. In fact I hardly go near the press -don’t have the time- so hard one to answer.
When is another Tear Garden album coming out?
TG? I hope in a year or so..I love working with Cevin so it’ll happen.
Will there be anymore Chemical Playschool releases?
Well, yup…up to Volume 18 now….Started it last May and we’re actually preparing packages containing it today..but it’s a mail-order only thing.
Looking back to the early days with the band, are there any members that you have lost touch with that you would like to see back in the band?
We played a show with our old violin player Patrick Wright as a guest last year and it was joyous-I miss them all to a point but also love the line-up we have right now.
People often fail to see the humour there. Sure it’s black as rotten plum, but it’s there.
I never put down other bands…It’s a rough climate for all of us these days .
Really ecstatic about albums where Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto have collaborated recently.Heard a live recording of reformed King Crimson this morning- astonishing. It was like they’d never been away.
Staying organised…never was so organised. I’m lousy at self-promotion too as you probably noticed.
Do you have a favorite release of your solo records?
You’ll maybe think this is shameless self-promotion and I guess it is. But the new one is honestly, swear to god, my favourite. It’s called “The Victoria dimension” and will be released by beta-lactam ring records at Hallowe’en.
